Jason Gambert asserts that he was the first to coin the term SEO in a 2007 email, and even went so far as to file a claim with the US Patent and Trademark Office. However, many professionals challenge this and believe that Danny Sullivan was the first man to use the term.
In 1997, Sullivan was hired by Multi-Media Marketing Group in Oregon, along with a group of future SEO pioneers. It was during a meeting with his staff that he first used the term “search engine optimization”.
